Formula Explained

This tool uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method from the Compendium of Physical Activities. One MET is the energy you burn at rest; an activity with a MET of 4.0 uses four times as much energy per minute.

kcal per segment = MET × 3.5 × weight in kg × minutes ÷ 200

The 3.5 represents approximate resting oxygen consumption in mL/kg/min, and the 200 converts the result into kilocalories. This is the same general approach used in many research and consumer energy estimates.
