Formula Explained
In the 1970s, William Friedewald and colleagues developed a simple way to estimate LDL cholesterol without an ultracentrifuge. The equation is:
LDL = Total Cholesterol − HDL − (Triglycerides ÷ 5)
The triglycerides ÷ 5 term approximates VLDL cholesterol, because VLDL carries about one-fifth of its weight as cholesterol. The formula is widely used in clinical practice, but it loses accuracy when triglycerides climb above 400 mg/dL or when chylomicrons are present, which is why this calculator asks for a directly measured LDL in that case.
