How the Calculation Works

The math is straightforward. Each fruit option has a calcium coefficient expressed in mg per 100 g. The tool converts your serving to grams if needed, then applies this formula:

Total calcium (mg) = (calcium per 100 g × serving grams) ÷ 100

For the daily-value percentage, it divides total calcium by your target and multiplies by 100. For milk equivalent, it divides by 300 mg, the approximate calcium in one cup (240 mL) of cow’s milk.

Worked example: You eat one medium orange, about 140 g. The orange provides 40 mg calcium per 100 g, so total = (40 × 140) ÷ 100 = 56 mg. Against a 1,300 mg target, that is 4.3%. If your target is 1,000 mg, the same orange covers 5.6%.

This weight-based method works for any portion: if you enter 0.5 oz of dried figs, the tool converts to 14.17 g and calculates 22.9 mg calcium.

Calcium Absorption: Fruit vs. Dairy

Not all calcium in a food is absorbed. Some fruits contain oxalates. Rhubarb, for example, has a respectable 86 mg calcium per 100 g, but its high oxalate content binds calcium and reduces bioavailability. Low-oxalate fruits such as oranges, figs, and dates provide calcium that is generally well absorbed, though the total amount is still modest compared with dairy or fortified plant milks.   • Comparing wet and dry weights. A cup of fresh figs has about 35 mg calcium per 100 g, but dried figs are around 162 mg per 100 g — the portion size is very different.
  • Ignoring the serving you actually eat. A 30 g handful of dried apricots gives only about 17 mg calcium; a 150 g bowl of fresh fruit salad can provide more despite a lower per-100g number.

Why is rhubarb listed if its calcium is poorly absorbed?

What about calcium-fortified orange juice?
