How It Works
The calculation is a straightforward proportion. Any nutrition label states "X g of fat per Y g (or mL) of product." To find fat per 100 g, divide the fat in one serving by the serving weight, then multiply by 100:
Fat per 100 g = (fat per serving ÷ serving weight in grams) × 100
When the serving size is in milliliters, the serving weight in grams equals volume × density. For example, a 240 mL serving of a milky sparkling drink with density 1.03 g/mL weighs 240 × 1.03 = 247.2 g. This matters because fat is expressed per unit of mass, and 100 mL is not the same as 100 g for most beverages.
Worked Examples
Example 1 — Whole milk. A label lists 8 g of total fat per 244 g serving. Fat per 100 g = (8 ÷ 244) × 100 = 3.28 g. That matches the familiar "3.25% milk fat" claim. The Daily Value is 3.28 ÷ 78 × 100 = 4.2%.
Example 2 — Sparkling drinks in mL. A sparkling lemonade label lists 5 g of fat per 355 mL serving, and the product density is 1.01 g/mL. Serving weight = 355 × 1.01 = 358.55 g. Fat per 100 g = (5 ÷ 358.55) × 100 = 1.39 g. If you treated the mL as grams and skipped density, you would get 1.41 g — a small difference, but the gap grows for dense or foamy liquids.

Tips & Accuracy Notes
- Always match the fat unit to the label. If the label says "fat 0.5 g" but "sodium 120 mg", only the fat number belongs in the fat field.
- When a label shows a rounded "0 g", the true amount may be up to 0.5 g per serving. Products claiming 0 g fat can still contain traces — check the ingredient list for cream, butter, or oils.
- For beverages that foam or hold gas, let bubbles settle before measuring volume at home. Better yet, use the label's own serving size.
- Compare foods on the same basis: always per 100 g, never per serving, because serving sizes are set by the manufacturer and vary widely.
Density is the main source of error. Carbonated drinks are usually close to water (0.98–1.02 g/mL), but sweetened or creamy ones can reach 1.05–1.15 g/mL. If you do not know the density, use 1.00 for water-based drinks and 1.03 as a reasonable default for dairy blends.
