Tip: Weigh fish raw when you can. Labels on packaged fish usually refer to the raw fillet, and most nutrition references list values on a raw basis. Cooking removes water, which changes grams per 100g but not the total potassium in your serving.

The Math Behind It

This calculator uses a simple proportion: if a 100 g portion of trout contains a certain amount of potassium, then your serving contains that amount scaled by its weight. First the tool converts your chosen unit into grams. The formula is:

Potassium (mg) = (serving weight in g ÷ 100) × potassium per 100g

It then computes the percent Daily Value by dividing potassium milligrams by 4,700 and multiplying by 100, or simply dividing by 47. This uses the daily value that the FDA sets for potassium on nutrition labels. Once your serving contains about 47 mg of potassium, that is roughly 1% DV.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using cooked and raw weights interchangeably. A 4 oz raw fillet weighs less after baking because water is lost. If you log the cooked weight but use a raw database value, you double-count.
  • Trusting one value for every trout dish. Smoked trout, trout canned in oil, and trout with seasoning or sauces can have different potassium and sodium levels.
  • Ignoring the serving unit. 100 g is about 3.5 oz; a fillet can be anywhere from 80 g to over 200 g. Measure whenever accuracy matters.
